As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, winter can bring unique challenges - especially when it comes to staying comfortable, healthy, and safe at home. With a little preparation and the right support, it’s possible to enjoy winter without worry.

1. Preventing falls

Icy paths, wet leaves, and darker evenings can all increase the risk of slips and trips. To help reduce the chance of falls:

• Keep pathways clear and well-lit - solar or motion-sensor lights can be especially helpful.
• Make sure sturdy, non-slip footwear is close to hand for stepping outdoors.
• Inside, remove loose rugs and keep clutter out of walkways.
• If you use walking aids, check that rubber tips are in good condition and not worn smooth.

2. Managing heating and comfort

Staying warm is vital for wellbeing during cold weather.

• Set your heating to maintain a consistent temperature - ideally between 18–21°C (64–70°F).
• Close curtains at dusk to keep warmth in and if required use draught excluders around external doors.
• Layer up with comfortable clothing and keep blankets nearby for extra warmth.

3. Medication management

Winter colds and flu can sometimes interfere with regular medication routines.

• Keep a well-stocked supply of prescriptions and order refills early to avoid running out in bad weather.
• Store medicines in a safe, dry place away from direct heat.
• If you’re feeling unwell or unsure about combining cold remedies with other prescriptions, contact your pharmacist or GP for advice.

4. Helping with errands during bad weather
